The Semi Finals of the BGBF British Bred Derby took place at Sheffield this evening and didn’t disappoint with some fine displays.
The opening Semi Final was landed by Carl Perry’s Geelo Monty as he produced a strong running performance to land the spoils from Viking Jerry and Lowgate Rudy. The son of Ballymac Eske and Macys Pergfect returned to winning ways after a barren spell as he swooped around the final two bends to pull away to a comprehensive four and a half length victory in 29.00. The race had been a scrappy affair with crowding at the opening turn before further crowding in behind the leaders at the third bend saw race favourite King Turbo a faller, thankfully he walked off the track and appeared to be ok.
There was another shock in the second Semi Final as 20/1 shot Lostrigg Zeus produced a superb front running performance to score, for Barrie Draper, leading home Sharpys Rocket with Down To The Felt taking the final qualifying spot. A black and white son of Tullymurry Act and Droopys Romy, Zeus trapped well and had plenty of racing room as he led into the opening turns. He moved well throughout and it was only on the run in when he came under any pressure but it cam too late as he held on for success by a neck in 29.20.
