Dundee June, a black June ’28 bitch by Kinloch Brae out of Sevenofnine, romped home to take the prize after proving to be the most determined in the rather untidy Final of the BGBF Scurry at Harlow!

The Scurry Final had started well, with Nathan Hunt’s Ive Got Gears taking an early lead, but then the field got very bunched up at the third bend! The one who coped the best was Dundee June, who came through the scrum to take the lead and win by one a quarter-lengths from long time leader Ive Got Gears in 26.88sec, with Whizzy Diamond crossing the line in third.

Bred by Robert Smith and trained by Dave Lewis for his West Moors Racing syndicate, Dundee June ran on strongly to take the £3,000 prize in this Cat 2 competition for British breds.

On behalf of the BGBF, Chair Liz Mort congratulated Dave Lewis, Bob Smith and West Moors Racing,  adding that first thoughts had been with King Bruno who was bowled over at the third bend. But he had recovered quickly and went across the middle of the track, which is why we didn’t see him finish on the video.  Rab McNair confirmed the next morning that thankfully he was none the worse for the experience.

Lewis said of Dundee June’s win: “I actually didn’t see her cross the winning line because Liz and Rab’s dog jumped the rail and was trying to rejoin the race, so it wasn’t until Rab congratulated me that I realised we’d actually won it. My glasses steamed up which didn’t help!

“She’s a home-bred bitch out of a home-bred brood (Sevenofnine) and I’d like to thank Bob Smith and Karen Doddington who whelp, rear and school my dogs. I’d also like to thank the British Greyhound Breeders Forum (BGBF) for putting these competitions on. I always try to support them.”

Ive Got Gears ran a great race for Nathan Hunt.  Originally owned by Kevin Hutton and previously known as Signet Sparrow, he was bred by Craig Dawson up on the Scottish borders. Whizzy Diamond also kept on well to come third. Another one with a change of name, he was originally named King Diamond and bred by Brendan Keogh and the KKS Syndicate (Eden The Kid x Skate On) which incredibly gave them four finalists!

Holding the Scurry at Harlow was new to the BGBF this year. In previous years Harlow has hosted the British Bred Sprint and Henlow the British Bred Scurry, but with the move to Towcester of most of Henlow’s opens and competitions, their distances wouldn’t accommodate the Scurry, so they were switched around! “We had the sprint at Towcester last month and the Scurry’s now at Harlow! The track’s 415m suits it well and we’ve seen some good racing throughout”, commented Mort. “I’d like to thank David Barclay and his team at Harlow for the effort they put into running this competition and also to SIS for their continued support which enables us to run so many competitions for British-bred dogs throughout the year!”
