A dream forecast for trainer Laurence Tuffin and leading owner/breeder Dave Firmager meant Wednesday’s BGBF British St Leger final at Doncaster proved a night to remember.

Indeed it has been a year to savour for Firmager after landing the Derby with Romeo Magico and, although his pair were both 7-1 chances for this £3,000 final (plus £500 for the winning breeder), he always looked set for joy when his Romeo Trooper asserted at the second turn after fast-starting Snooty Rose drifted hopelessly wide.

Mahoonagh Jap had walked out but showed great middle speed to come through to challenge at half-way with favourite Moments Of Magic (slow away) also going well, but the leaders bunched and Romeo Trooper went on again.  Romeo Riot, the 942m Dorando runner-up, keeping wide, was always travelling well and the most experienced finalist – this was his 84th start – came through to challenge and lead on the run-in. He beat his kennelmate by a length in 43.38sec. Moments Of Magic was a further length away third.
