BGBF Derby First Round Review

Owlerton Stadium, Sheffield, hosted four heats of top class action as the BGBF British Bred Heats got underway this evening.

The opening heat saw a facile success for last year’s BGBF Derby Champion, King Elvis. Trained by Liz McNair, leading early he was never troubled as he cruised to a length and half victory from runner up Down to The Felt and third placed Viking Jerry. From the superb Tullymurry Act and Skate On litter he stopped the clock in 29.20. The second heat went to John Mullins’ Romeo Mandate who’s strong running style allowed him to power home for the victory with Lowgate Malfoy running on to grab second and early leader, Lets Be Ready back in third spot. Th son of Ace Hi Rumble and Fabulous Puzzle powered home to a three and a quarter length success in 29.27.


The penultimate heat went the way of Lowgate Rudy for Jim Hayton. The son of Droopys Scolari and Bansha Mo produced a top class front running performance to to lead home Lostrigg Zeus and Carn Brae as he crossed the line by a length in 29.46. The final heat was claimed by multiple Category 1 winner King Turbo, making it a double on the evening for trainer Liz McNair. Being challenged to the opening turn by he Nottingham British Breeders Champion, Let Me Tell You, Turbo held his position on the outside of the early challenger before taking up the running round the 2nd bend. This is the way it stayed as Turbo ran out a comfortable winner from Let Me tell You and Sharpys Rocket in third spot. Turbo clocked 29.29 in his length and half success.
