The opening round of the 2018 BGBF Puppy Cup got underway at Sheffield this evening with six heats of good quality racing on show.

The opening heat went the way of Fearsome Skipper (Adageo Bob – Santro Cruz) as he led home Awesome Alfie (Tyrur Big Mike – Roxholme Dream) by two and a half lengths in 29.50. Overcoming trouble in the run up he powered his way along the back straight to take command of the race and score the victory.

The Babadook (Ballymac Vic – Blackhouse Heidi) took Heat 2 in the fastest time of the heats, as he ran out an impressive seven and half length winner in 28.97. He was followed home by Burnfoot Axle (Adageo Bob – Burnfoot Belle), ;eading early he justified the odds on favouritism from the bookmakers.

Heat 3 went to the Monmore raider, Roxhill Mystique (Laughil Blake – Bleisce Charm) as she showed good back straight pace to take up the running and come home two lengths in front of Fearsome Ferigno (Adageo Bob – Santro Cruz) in 29.02.

Lostrigg Zeus (Tullymurry Act – Droopys Romy) took control of Heat 4 into the opening turn and ran out a comfortable winner by three lengths from kennel mate These Old Shades (Confident Rankin – Farloe Lila) as they led home a 1-2 for local handler Barrie Draper. Zeus stopped the clock in 29.19.

The penultimate heat saw Lowgate Rudy (Droopys Scolari – Bansha Mo) overcome early crowding to lead at the opening turn to lead home Harton Willow (Confident Rankin – Farloe Lila) by a length in 29.21.

The final heat, Heat 6, went to the market leader, Porterhouse (Superior Product – Jazz). Not leading til the 3rd bend he powered away to a seven and three quarter length winning margin from Commanche Storm (Storm Control – Atouchofvenus) in 29.18.
